UNILEVER CHEF OF THE YEAR COMPETITION: FINAL CALL FOR ENTRIES
Unilever Food Solutions has been helping chefs all over the world serve tasty, wholesome meals since the 1880s. They have been recognising and rewarding talent and innovation in chefs for just as long. This year will be no different. The 2011 edition of the prestigious annual Unilever Food Solutions Chefs of the Year takes place around the country in August, with the finals scheduled for 16 September in Durban, and Unilever is challenging chefs across all levels to put their skills to the test against South Africa’s finest talent to discover if they have what it takes to walk away with the title AND their share of R90 000 in prize money. With the standard of the competition reaching higher and higher levels each year as the prize money increases to become the richest and most respected culinary competition in South Africa, the talent, creativity and competitive spirit of chefs around South Africa will be put to the test once again as, using some of the very same ingredients that are staples of professional kitchens in 74 countries around the world, they’ll be expected to impress the judges with their inspiring menu creations, showcasing their talents and creating dishes that will set them apart from the rest. The winner of last year’s Unilever Food Solutions Senior Chef of the Year, PetrusMadutlela, currently based at the Savoy in London, last month walked away with R40 000 in the Unilever Food Solutions By Invitation Only Chef of the Year 2011, proving that, against all odds as the least experienced of the sixchef participants, this is a competition which can make dreams come true. If being the best of the best is your dream then enter now! Entries close on 24 July, after which successful entrants will be put to the test at three regional semi-finals in either Cape Town (1 August), Johannesburg(3 August) or Durban (5 August). Finalists selected from the three regional semi-finals will then go through to compete in the Mystery Basket National Final at Unilever Food Solutions Head Office in Durban on 16 September. The three categories of the competition – Senior, Junior and Team of Four – allow for entries by all levels of chefs. The Senior categorycalls for chefs with more than five years of professional culinary experience and the Junior category for chefs with less than five years’ experience. Applicants in both these categories are required to submit recipes for a three-course meal using Unilever Food Solutions products in order to qualify for selection for the semi-finals where they will be required to prepare a three-course menu for three people using a mystery basket of ingredients, as well as ingredients from a communal table. The Team category is open to teams consisting of four members; a team manager (or executive chef), senior cook, junior cook/assistant and a waitron from any hotel, canteen or restaurant across South Africa. Regional cook-offs are not held for the Team of Four category, but six teams will be chosen to compete in the mystery basket national finals in September from all national entries received. The six Team of Four finalists will be required to present a starter, main course and dessert for six people, as well as a unique table setting designed to dazzle the judges.
