StreetSmart Winter Restaurant Week

The StreetSmart Winter Restaurant Week, when some of the region’s finest will be offering special menus at affordable prices, is on from 18 to 24 July.

The participating restaurants in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Somerset West, Strand Franschhoek, Paarl and Citrusdal, are all supporters of StreetSmart SA, an organisation dedicated to helping street children rebuild their lives.

Working hand-in-hand with NGOs actively involved in the social development and rehabilitation of street children, StreetSmart raises funds through a voluntary R5 donation with each table’s bill at some 57 participating restaurants.

  From bistro food to fine dining, and even an overnight Winelands stay, StreetSmart Winter Restaurant Week caters for all tastes and budgets. Tuck into delicious 3-course lunches or dinners for anything between R100 and R250 per person at the majority of the participating restaurants.

All the offers are well below the usual á la carte prices, but the cost per head and type of menu differs from restaurant to restaurant, with many offering the choice of wine pairings with their StreetSmart winter menus. From sushi to sirloin, exotic stir fries and spring rolls to traditional waterblommetjie soup, roast duck and even a meat fondue, StreetSmart Winter Restaurant Week has something for everyone at prices to suit your pocket.

  In addition to offering locals great food at affordable prices, StreetSmart Winter Restaurant Week is aimed at making more people aware of the wonderful work NGOs do to extend a hand to these marginalised youths, rather than just giving money to children living on the streets.  

  "It is vitally important that the public do not give children money on the street. This will just keep them there. They should rather suggest the child goes to one of the shelters which can really help them," says Margi Biggs, Chairperson of StreetSmart SA.

  Since its inception in June 2005, StreetSmart has raised over R4 million through participating restaurants and private donations all contributing towards social development and educational upliftment projects for street children in their respective areas.
